Abstract

In Java, Islam appears with a humanist character, not rigid, gentle and full of protection. With the wisdom and patience of the muballighin (wali) spread Islam gently. They use adaptive steps by allowing traditions that have been deeply rooted to be accompanied by steps of infiltration of Islamic teachings and views. Almost all Islamic teachings collaborated with the customs that were believed and carried out by the Javanese at that time, including the issue of marriage and the rules in it such as the issue of kafaah. This article discusses the concept of kafaah according to Islamic law and Javanese custom, how the similarities and differences in the concept of kafaah according to Islamic law and Javanese custom, and how the relevance of the concept of kafaah according to Islamic law and Javanese custom. Kafaah is a condition where in a marriage there must be a balance between husband and wife regarding certain aspects that can avoid crises that can damage married life. The main purpose of kafaah is the realization of domestic peace and permanence. If the marriage is based on a common perception, compatibility of views, and mutual understanding, then surely the marriage will be peaceful, happy and always shaded by the grace of Allah SWT. This article concludes that kafaah according to Islamic law and Javanese custom do not contradict each other, go hand in hand and complement each other.
